Elizabeth Mitchell speelt in nieuwe film

Elizabeth Mitchell gaat naast V ook nog eens een rol in een nieuwe film spelen.

Elizabeth Mitchell is carving out some time to shoot a movie too: She’ll star in the indie ensemble drama Answers to Nothing, EW.com has confirmed. In the film, which is set against the backdrop of a child abduction chase and focuses on lost Angelenos in search of redemption, Mitchell is a woman consumed by her desire to have a baby with her husband (Dane Cook). “Playing a hormonal woman whose marriage is shaky and who has lost her way through her ultimate obsession—I love stuff like that. That’s where I live,” she tells EW.com, adding: “The movie is a little bit like Magnolia where you get this glimpse into people’s lives and it may not be exactly what you want to see, but it is accurate.” Currently shooting in Los Angeles, Answers to Nothing also stars Julie Benz, Barbara Hershey, Zach Gilford, Kali Hawk, Eric Palladino, Mark Kelly, Miranda Bailey, and singer Aja Volkman. Matthew Leutwyler (Dead & Breakfast) is directing and co-writing the film, which is being produced by Ambush Entertainment (The Squid and the Whale).

Naveen Andrews gastrol in Law & Order

Lost star Naveen Andrews has signed on to film a guest spot on an episode of Law & Order: SVU, TVGuide.com has learned exclusively.

The details of his role are being kept under wraps for now, but the episode starts filming in the next week or so in New York.

Andrews, 40, plays Sayid Jarrah on ABC's Lost, which is still shooting its final season in Hawaii. (A source tells us they're on Episode 6 of 18.)

Let's not jump to any conclusions though. "As with previous seasons, not all cast members are in every episode," says a studio rep. It's entirely possible that Andrews will finish his SVU gig and return to Hawaii to shoot more Lost. But the timing does at least raise the question: Is Andrews, and thus Sayid, done for the season?

Before Lost, Andrews was best known for playing a sensitive explosives expert who wooed Juliette Binoche in Anthony Minghella's The English Patient.

Andrews' SVU episode will air in January 2010, right around the time that Lost's sixth and final season premieres.

J.J. Abrams begint comedy bij Fox

J.J. Abrams is taking a comedic turn at Fox with a half-hour project written by Mike Markowitz.

Abrams, co-creator/executive producer of Fox's sophomore sci-fi drama "Fringe," is exec producing the untitled comedy, which has been given a presentation order.

Details on the premise are being kept under wraps beyond a bare-bones logline of "a comedic medical show."

Markowitz and Bryan Burk also exec produce the presentation from Warner Bros. TV and Abrams' studio-based Bad Robot Prods.

The medical drama field is crowded with stalwarts "Grey's Anatomy" and "House" as well as "Private Practice" and newcomers "Trauma," "Miami Trauma," "Mercy," "Three Rivers" and "Hawthorne." But there is room for medical comedies, with ABC's veteran "Scrubs" and Showtime's freshman dramedy "Nurse Jackie" the only players.

Markowitz, who has worked on such comedy series as "Becker" and "It's All Relative," is repped by CAA.

Interview met Damon Lindelof

Last night in Beverly Hills, Sci Fi Crush got the chance to speak briefly with Damon Lindelof, executive producer of Lost and co-writer of the upcoming Star Trek sequel.

The hit ABC series, Lost, approaches its sixth and final season in 2010. Lindelof described writing the last episodes to be “an enormous emotional experience” and confirmed that the show’s ending has been in the works since the very beginning.

The writer also promised Lost fans that all of the show’s loose ends will be tied up in a fair and satisfying way. ”We hope that all who put their faith in us to resolve these stories will be rewarded. We’ve really been writing this season for the fans.”

Damon Lindelof also produced this summer’s reboot of Star Trek and has been working with Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci on developing the sequel. ”It’s in the preliminary stages,” he said, “We’ve thrown around some cool ideas, but that’s it.”

Lindelof and Carlton Cuse are up for an Emmy for their two-parter Lost episode, “The Incident.”

We wish them all the best.

Jimmy Kimmel vergelijkt Obama met Lost

Hoe gaat Lost eindigen?

Last Night’s ‘Lost’: How’s It Going to End?

As the castaways of Oceanic 815 celebrated the 100th episode of “Lost,” what did we viewers receive as party favors? Another episode in which the big reveal is that a supporting character is secretly the child of two other supporting characters. (Will we next learn that Ben is the son of the smoke monster and the four-toed statue?) And another episode in which the plot increments could be measured only at the sub-atomic level.

We’re now less than two weeks away from the “Lost” season finale — ostensibly the last major cliffhanger its creative team can cook up, before the show’s final season begins in 2010 — and yet events are unfolding so slowly, we have to wonder more than ever: Do the producers of “Lost” really know where they’re going with this thing?

When we met with Damon Lindelof, an executive producer and co-creator of “Lost,” not long ago to talk about “Star Trek,” we asked him how he and his staff were preparing for the final year of the show. Here was his (appropriately cryptic) answer:

There’s so much organizational power, especially now. The less episodes there are, the more you have to go, like, “Oh my God, we have to do this. When are we going to do that?” We always get asked iterations of the same question which is, “Are you making it up as you go along?” It’s a very complicated question to answer, but ultimately, we have all the story but we don’t know what order we’re going to tell it in. So it’s like “Pulp Fiction.”

There was always an option in past seasons which was, “Let’s hold it for next year. I don’t think they’re ready for that,” or “That’ll have more emotional impact later.” And then there are also actor deals to contend with – what’s the stable of regulars you can maintain at any one time? Next year, I feel like for the first time we’ll have the entire box of crayons to color with, without having to worry about the mechanics. All our ducks are in a row.

I think one of our biggest concerns is reaching the climax of the story too soon – you have to time it right, you have to walk that line between giving a steady supply of story and character pathos and mysteries being answered along the way, so that the audience doesn’t feel like it all comes in one big chunk. But then if you do it too soon, they kind of feel like, “I got everything that I cared about halfway through the season, so why am I still watching?” And it’s terrifying. Finally, we’re going to do it. There’s no excuses, we don’t get to say, “We didn’t get to end the show on our own terms. They kept us on the air three years longer than we wanted to be. Blah blah blah.” It’s like “Galactica,” you have to say, “Here it is, do you like it? I hope you like it.” There’s a lot of second-guessing going on. I think the show will end exactly as it began. There’ll be people who love it, there’ll be people who hate it. There’ll be people who’ll be confused by it, there’ll be people who love being confused. It’ll end on its own terms.

Did that answer all your lingering questions? Got any theories of your own about how the current season of “Lost” might wrap up, and where the show will go in its final year? Let us know in the comments below.

(Incidentally, in the scene when Charles Widmore comes to visit Daniel Faraday, did you wonder why the camera seemed to flash gratuitously on a back issue of Wired magazine? The Twitter-sphere is wondering, too.)

Lost's schokkende dood

And you thought the next grave was going to be Juliet's... Wrong!

Time-traveling expert Daniel Faraday (nicknamed "Twitchy" by Sawyer) has become the latest Lostie to bite the big one, leaving the 1970's Dharmaville outcasts to fend for themselves just when they need him most.

Executive producers Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof commend Jeremy Davies for pulling off an increasingly bizarro role--and taking the news of his firing better than any of their previous island victims.

“For us, Faraday really was the cornerstone of the fifth season--he really shined,” says Lindelof. "I can’t imagine what Season 5 would have looked like without Jeremy Davies. When you think about all the crazy stuff that had to come out of that guy’s mouth, for him to be as interesting and emotional and poetic as he was is really extraordinary."

Lindelof and Cuse say they were impressed by how gracefully Davies dealt with his dismissal. While disappointed to be losing a paycheck, the actor saw his departure as essential to their storytelling. Lindelof says, "When Carlton and I called Jeremy to explain what was going to be happening with Faraday, we’ve never had a more awesome exit interview with somebody on the show.”

“It was an incredibly painful thing to kill this beloved character," Cuse adds, "but we feel that’s what this show has to do. His death is kind of the culminating event in the entire season. It really ends one chapter and commences the start of the final chapter of the entire series. Once we explained that to Jeremy, while he was personally saddened that his full-time status on Lost was coming to an end, he put the story above his own personal self.” (Hmmm...notice Cuse's wording: "full-time status".)

So why was now the right time to do him in?

"When we kill off a character we want the audience to say, ‘How dare you!,’ not, ‘It’s about time,’” explains Lindelof, who was particularly impressed with Davies' final scenes. “He has never been better than he was in 'The Variable.'"

Michael Emerson, who plays Ben, praises Davies as “a great sensitive guy who got deep into his character. He really lived it.” (And died it!)

Around the set, Terry O’Quinn (John Locke) will miss Davies and the music that always accompanied him. “Most actors walk around with headphones, but Jeremy would walk around holding a miniature boom box," recalls O'Quinn. "He always wanted to provide music for everyone--whether they wanted it or not. Everybody would go, ‘What’s up with this dude?’”

O'Quinn remembers the time Davies brought his boom box out into the water during an action scene. “We were out paddling in a canoe with me, Ken Leung (Miles), Josh (Sawyer), Jeremy and Elizabeth (Juliet) and we ended up flipping a half mile out to sea. The first thing I thought of when I came up was, 'I hope Jeremy’s f---ing boom box went to the bottom--and it did. But he replaced it real quick.”

Davies won't be so easily replaced. Do you think Faraday was killed off too soon? Or were you tired of his time-traveling jargon?

Secrets of Lost #11

J.J. Abrams over The Dark Tower

Schrijvers praten over het laatste seizoen

On "Lost," a solved mystery inevitably means an even knottier one will emerge in its place. How fitting, then, that answering "when" ABC's acclaimed island drama would end wound up raising expectations for "how."

"Anticipation for the series finale is incredibly high," says Stephen McPherson, president of ABC Entertainment Group. "I'm sure it'll mean a few sleepless nights for Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse."

Not too many, if the exec producers have anything to say about it.

"We can't let those expectations terrify us," Lindelof insists. "The reality is, we've known what the series finale is going to be for a while now."

The only wiggle room is in how exactly the characters will arrive at their ultimate destinations. Explains Cuse, "The path that we take to the end still has some room for surprises and changes and discoveries along the way (in terms of) the characters' journeys and how their relationships evolve."

Getting Lindelof and Cuse to spill even a drop of a detail about how they plan to wrap the whole thing up? Not gonna happen.

"We think it's cool," Lindelof says, "and that's the way we will have written the 119 hours of the show that precede it."

They will, however, share some goals for the final episode: Be fair to the show's characters. Deliver on promises they've made to fans over the course of the series' run. And, as the old adage goes, leave 'em wanting more.

"When we say more, we don't mean answers," clarifies Lindelof, "because hopefully, the show will wrap up in an incredibly satisfying way, both mythologically and emotionally."

Of course, as that other old adage goes, you can't please everybody, and Lindelof and Cuse already have begun preparing themselves for myriad reactions. The way Lindelof sees it, "The immediate aftermath of any beloved series, whether it be 'Battlestar Galactica,' 'The Sopranos' or 'Seinfeld,' is so overwhelming that it's incredibly hard to distance yourself from the creative choices made leading up to it."

Ultimately, the producers are more concerned with the way "Lost" is regarded long after its final whoosh through time.

"How the show is perceived as a whole once you kind of take a step away and look back at it," Lindelof says, "that's the one that really matters to us."

Henry Ian Cusick beschuldigt van aanranding

Henry Ian Cusick, who plays Desmond on the show "Lost," is being sued for sexual harassment.

According to a lawsuit filed today in Los Angeles Superior Court, Chelsea Stone claims that while working on the show, Cusick placed his hand on her buttocks and caressed the back of her body while making moaning sounds.

She also claims Cusick "placed his face on top of [her] breasts, moving his face from side to side." He then squeezed her breasts with his hands.

According to the lawsuit, approximately twelve days after this went down, Stone was let go. ABC and Grass Skirt Productions are also named as defendants. She is seeking unspecified damages.

Cusick's rep had no comment.

Lost nummer 3 in top 50 beste televisiedrama's in de geschiedenis

AOL heeft Lost gekozen als derde in de top 50 beste televisiedrama's in de geschiedenis.

ABC toont Flash Forward trailers tijdens Lost

ABC is so excited about its new project Flash Forward the network has plans to start marketing the show before its even officially ordered a series.

When viewers tune in for the 100th episode of Lost next week, they will be served an extra dose of mystery. Sources said ABC will launch a stealth promo campaign for Flash during the episode, in which Daniel Faraday (Jeremy Davies) will come clean about what he knows about the island.

While questions from the dense mythology of Lost probably will be answered in the episode, the commercial breaks are sure to raise a host of new ones. Viewers will see perplexing snippets that might direct viewers to a Web site.

The mystery spots will in fact be for Flash. They are said to be part of an elaborate marketing campaign for the drama, which has not been officially picked up but is quietly being positioned on ABC's schedule for next season. ABC has used several online Web sites to promote Lost over the years; sites designed to expand on various aspects of the the show's complex mythology.

Several summer programs are getting early starts next month as networks jockey to use their in-season momentum to launch post-season programs. But promoting a new show for next season in April -- a program that hasn't even been formerly announced yet -- is extremely unusual.

Fox is making a somewhat similar early move with its musical drama Glee, which will air one episode after American Idol next month before launching the show in the fall. Both Flash and Glee are expected to have marketing campaigns that help ramp up excitement for the projects through the summer.

From the moment in September the Flash spec script by filmmaker David S. Goyer and Star Trek veteran Brannon Braga landed at ABC with a series commitment, the project has been considered a perfect companion for Lost. Yet with Lost airing in midseason, ABC promoting Flash suggests the network may be considering the show for fall rather than trying to air the shows on the same night..

Based on Robert J. Sawyer's sci-fi novel, Flash starring Joseph Fiennes, chronicles the aftermath of a global event in which everyone in the world blacks out for 2 minutes, 17 seconds and has a mysterious vision of the future.

Ken Leung als tweede in top 10 acteurs klaar voor avondtelevisie

2. Ken Leung
Where you've seen him: Lost, The Sopranos, and if you're lucky, Keeping the Faith (video below)
Did you see this week's episode of Lost? As Miles Straume, Leung absolutely owned that episode, and showed people what he's capable of. The camera never gets tired of Ken--he's one of those rare talents that grabs your attention and puts it in a headlock.

Where we want to see him next: Ken Leung will never play a romantic lead or action hero, but he is perfect as an antihero. How about as a charming scamp hustling people in the big city?
Next project: As far as we can tell, he's available as soon as Lost kills off Miles :).

In de Franse krant L'Yonne Républicaine staat dat Evangeline Lilly en Michael Emerson op 25 april naar de Grand Rex in Parijs komen.

Klein stukje Lost in interview Harold Perrineau

In een nieuw interview met Harold Perrineau gaat een klein stukje over Lost.
TV.com: Time for some 'Lost' questions. Just to clarify, are you dead or un-dead? Are you done with the show?

Harold Perrineau: I get to clarify it? Is that what you're saying? I get to clarify something on 'Lost'? I couldn't clarify anything on 'Lost'. [laugh] As far as I know, Michael is blown up. But I know that the island is moving back and forth in time and they're doing flash forwards and flash backs. I still work for ABC, so I would wind up back on 'Lost' for a minute or two. Or not. But I have no idea. I wish I could clarify it.

TV.com: Now that you've had a bit of time to think about it, and after the fourth season, do you feel Michael was redeemed? Because he was kind of hated there for a while.

Harold Perrineau: Personally, I don't see where he was redeemed. I get that he helped out and he got most of those people off, but I still don't know if Ben is a good guy or a bad guy. So I couldn't tell you if he's redeemed. I have no idea. If Ben turns out to be a bad guy, then you know, he was a jerk for being there spying for him. But if he turns out to be a good guy, well then he did a good thing by helping. So, I don't--see, this is what happens with 'Lost'. What I wind up saying almost every time is, "I don't know". I sound like Scoobydoo, "Ardonno." [laugh]

TV.com: Thanks for talking to us.

Hurley's script

Zap2it heeft het script The Empire Strikes Back van Hurley weten te bemachtigen.
Bad times for the Rebellion, dude. After the Death Star went all bloop, The Empire got mad. Real mad. "Chase the Rebels to the ends of the Universe" mad.

The rebels, with the help of Luke Skywalker, are hiding out on Hoth. It’s colder than a frozen donkey wheel cave there. Obsessed with finding young Skywalker, Darth Vader has sent loads of spy robot thingies to find Luke for reasons yet unknown.

Exterior--Hoth. A little spy robot thingy zips through the atmosphere and crashes into the snowy planet below. That's when Chewbacca shows up and blasts it away with his crossbow laser. He shakes his furry fist in the sky in triumph.

Chewbacca: Raaar.

Han Solo: Nice work, fuzzball. Now let’s go pay off that debt to Jabba. The Hutster’s gotta be pretty peeved about that $3.2 million we owe him. Hey, anyone seen Luke? I wanna tell him that the Force will always be with him, and stuff.

Luke: Sorry, I’m a bit busy feeling the blood flow into my brain here in this monster’s cave.

Obi-Wan: Luke. Luuuuuke. You totally have to go see Yoda, Luke. You need to learn how to become a Jedi so your father will love you again.

Luke: What I totally need? A jacket. And my father is dead! Dead! That’s what you told me. Don’t you remember?

Obi-Wan: Whatever happened, happened.

C-3P0: Sirs, welcome back! Wait, what happened to you? Looks like you have a ton of Arzt on you.

Leia’s way excited to see Luke, and tries to kiss him, but fortunately she trips over a stray cable and falls to the ground. Whew. That was close.

Leia: Han, no time to leave now. The Empire’s bearing down on us. I count four AT-AT Walkers approaching.

She’s been labeled insane, tough, controversial and bisexual. All of these things Michelle Rodriguez can neither confirm nor deny. But Latina’s May cover star does talk openly about her hard partying past, the stereotypes she battles in Hollywood, and what she finds attractive in a mate. Read on for some of Rodriguez’s choice quotes, and pickup the new issue of Latina, on newsstands April 22nd.

On racking up $250,000 in legal fees and serving 18 days in L.A.’s Lynwood Jail:
“It was important for me to get all of that stuff out of the way before I hit 30. It was a bunch of reality checks all at once, like, ‘Wake up, kid, time to get to work.’ Now I feel like I’m being born again.”

On Being Misunderstood:
“I knock on wood that the media will understand me. But if I only saw one percent of my life, I would think the same thing everybody else thinks. So when they don’t get it, I don’t feel lost. My whole thing is, I’m waiting for them to catch up.”

On the Idea of Marriage:
“I don’t believe in commitment. That’s like giving somebody the responsibility of your happiness, like, ‘Here, you make sure that all my orgasms are great, that I have somebody to hold on cold winter nights, and just assure me that if anybody messes with me, you’ll beat them up.’ Other than that, I don’t see the point of marriage. But when I need my love, I get my love.”

On What Attracts Her:
“Hugh Jackman,” she says, stipulating that she likes her men over 35 and with the right mix of brains and brawn. “I can’t stand boys. A boy looks at me like he wants to bang me, and I wanna throw up. I like men, ’cause they’ve been around the block and they respect their mamis. It’s hard to find one that’s not machista.”

On Her Parents:
“My father loved women,” she says of dad Rafael, who died in 1997 of liver failure due to alcoholism. “And my mom, like a smart Dominican woman, used to smell his underwear when he came home to make sure he hadn’t been with someone else.”

On Not Following the Rules in Hollywood:
“If I had done what the powers that be in Hollywood told me to do—‘Do a hot action movie playing the half-naked girlfriend, then do a Maxim cover [which Rodriguez has turned down in the past] and then start a music career to make yourself even hotter’— I’d be making $10 million per movie by now. If I would’ve followed that formula, kissing all the asses along the way, then I’d be there right now. But I wouldn’t be happy because I wouldn’t be living my truth.”

Josh Holloway is oud genoeg om vader te zijn

Today, I was thrilled to read that the witty and charming Josh Holloway, who plays grifter-turned-leader-of-men Sawyer on ABC's Wednesday-night drama "Lost," and wife Yessica Kumala became first-time parents on April 9 with the birth of a daughter, Java Kumala Holloway.

On April 3, I talked to Holloway by phone from the "Lost" location in Hawaii for a syndicated feature story to coincide with the show's 100th episode, airing on April 29 (click here for cast member Jorge Garcia's blog, which contains pictures of the celebratory cake, created by Charm City Cakes of Food Network's "Ace of Cakes").

As it turned out, the conversation took place only days before the blessed event, and luckily I had time to ask Holloway how he felt about being a dad.

Holloway said, "Well, I'm about to find out. We're getting close. It's beyond moving. I can't even describe it to you. I listen to country music and drive my car, and it makes me all teary. I'm like, 'God, I've got to listen to reggae or something, so I'll be happy.'

"It's powerful. Those emotions come up around a child. It's been a lot of fun. It's just been amazing. It's been a really wonderful experience so far. Few more weeks" -- little did he know it would be a few more days -- "I'll be with my sunglasses on, trying to change diapers and avoid getting pooed on."

On this particular Friday, Holloway said that he had one more day of work, which meant that filming would be wrapped up before the birth.

"Yes, that timed out really nicely," he said, "for the wife, for me, because I really want to be there. I don't want to miss that, because it's quite an amazing experience."

Asked if he and his wife were fully equipped at home, Holloway said, "Of course. We're all cocked and ready. We're so ready, it's ridiculous. So far, so good. We're just waiting for the day. She is very ready, and she's been great."

Some of Holloway's fellow cast members are parents, and as to whether they've been giving him advice, he said, "Oh, gosh, whether you seek it or not, you get it. I have heard every story there is from men, women -- oh my goodness -- read all the books and all that.

"Now I'm ready to just do it, and I think that's natural. It's the beauty of nature -- you get that nine months to actually wrap your psyche and heart around what you're about to get into. You have to learn all these things, and then you just have to do it, go on instinct.

"But I'm looking forward to it."

I wondered aloud whether this new-daddy business might make Holloway all mellow.

"I might be," he said, "you never know. Good God knows I'm round at the moment. I'm definitely having a pregnancy with my wife. I'm like, 'Shirt off, I don't think so. No, no, we'll do that next year.' Right now, I'm being a soft Daddy-O."

Speaking of shirts coming off, although Holloway said he was glad that his big TV success came a little later Josh3 in life, there are advantages to youth when the script calls for several shirtless scenes, as Holloway had in this year's season premiere.

"Staying in shape would be a lot easier," he said on that subject. "Not so fun for me, because I'm like 38, 39 -- that would have been better at 25. But, you know, you do what you gotta, and it keeps you in shape, whether you like it or not.

"So it's like, 'All right, I'll do it,' then I made the phone calls, 'Please, guys, don't do that to me anymore.' They broke the back of it this season, and I was like, 'Ya'll, I can't.'"

As for the tan, though, Holloway reveals that was the easy part.

"That's au naturel," he said. "I can get pretty dark. If I have to do a scene of that nature, I just go fishing, hang out on the boat all day. Four or five hours in the sun, you change four or five shades darker. I just did that, and I'm glad I did."

Daniel Dae Kim stopt met MySpace

THE END OF THE EXPERIMENT
Well it lasted much longer than I thought, but alas, after much thought, I have decided to end my MySpace page. Thanks to all of you who helped make my time here so enjoyable. Your comments, blog responses, and photos often brought a smile, and sometimes even a downright chuckle. It's great to know how many loyal fans of the show are out there, and staying faithful to the end.

If you're still interested in reading my blog though, I'll be writing over at my website danieldaekim.com. In fact, look for a new entry in the next couple of days as I prepare to head to London to do "The King and I" at the Albert Hall."

I'll keep this page active for a few days as I wind down, and in a week, it should be gone *poof.*

One final note though, I will be monitoring to make sure no fake profiles of me start going up again, but I won't be able to catch everything. If there's a new page up that doesn't have a new candid photo, along with an intro from me, then you can assume that it's fake. I'll be sure to let you know if and when I return.

Thanks again everyone. It's been a lot of fun communicating with all of you, and most of all, thanks for supporting my work and career.

Mahalo and Aloha!

Josh Holloway is vader

Lost heartthrob Josh Holloway and wife Yessica welcomed a daughter on April 9 in Oahu, PEOPLE has exclusively confirmed. They named their baby girl Java Kumala Holloway.

"Dad and Mom are absolutely thrilled," a source close to the actor, 39, tells PEOPLE. "Everyone's happy and healthy." This is the first child for the couple, who have been married since 2004.

Holloway's Lost costar Daniel Dae Kim knew the actor would enjoy fatherhood. "He'll be an incredible dad," Kim told PEOPLE in February. "When you talk to him about his baby, his face completely lights up."

Ask Lost Part 1: Michael Emerson

zaterdag 4 april 2009

Interview met Michael Emerson

Q: How would you describe your character?

A: Ben is intelligent and he is an operator. He's a great student of psychology and he knows how to work people. He is sometimes very ruthless. We've seen that. Yet, to counterbalance that, we've seen him genuinely grieve the loss of a daughter, probably the loss of his own childhood or the loss of a chance to live a decent romantic life that he sees other people have. And of course he doesn't have a happy relationship with members of the opposite sex, either. So he's kind of alone.

Q: What does it do to you to play role like that all day?

A: Well, you're not meditating on your backstory while you're doing the scenes. You're just sort of playing the moment at hand. And that's more fun. It's like a sport, really, or a kind of gamesmanship. It's good, fun work. It's a character with many layers, which is not what you always expect to get when you go to work in the television industry. So I think I have the best of both worlds. I get to play a character that has all the complexity of a stage character and yet all the visibility and reach of someone that comes in through the little box in people's living rooms.

Q: Can Ben ever be trusted? Is he always looking out for himself or is he looking out for the island?

A: Well, for a long time, I would've said that those were one in the same motives, that his mission was also the island's mission. Now that's gotten more complicated because now Ben is out of favor, out of power. So I think, you can always count on the fact that what Ben says to you will be literally true, in a way. But he's sort of a wickedly effective equivocator. You never know what he really means or how a thing is really going to play out. Yet we've seen him more vulnerably powerless this season. That trend will continue through to the end of the season. Ben is sort of inexplicable. We have to wait and see how it's going to work. It keeps people wondering.

Q: Does it keep you wondering?

A: Yeah, I like that the character is as ambiguous as he is and has always been. And they seem to have figured out a way to keep that going.

Q: He is the character fans love to hate. Is he ever going to have any love interest?

A: I don't see how. I think he hasn't the kind of social maturity or frankly enough time in the day to get focused on someone outside himself. His mission does not allow enough leisure time for romance. This is not to say that he doesn't become attached to people or possessive of them, because we saw that with his relationship with Juliette. But it wasn't going to go anywhere because like most people who have part of their brain very highly developed, I think the other parts of the brain or personality lag behind. He has many gifts. And he is, on some level, a genius, I suppose. But in the field of personal development, he's not very highly evolved. He's immature about relationships.

Q: We now can figure out a little bit about why. You're beaten up in almost every episode.

A: Yeah, I had a few episodes early this season where I got to be cleaned up and spiffed up. It was nice to wear those sort of James Bond kind of clothes and stuff. But of course that's all over now. Now I'm back to my tattered rags and my bleeding face.

Q: So you get to makeup in the morning and you say, "Make me bleed."

A: Yeah. And it feels like who I am now on the show. It's not really Ben if he's not beaten.

Q: And you have to match the wounds from day to day.

A: Oh, they do. They make a little stencil on a sheet of Saran Wrap. And they lay it on my face every day and mark the dots. And the wounds evolve, as they naturally would. A bruise goes from purple to yellow and green to pale pink. Our head makeup guy is a real student of cuts and bruises and how they heal. So it's really interesting. It's quite scientific.

Q: Does everyone ask you about the eyes?

A: I guess I have an effective focus. Completely out of my control, but my eyes are somewhat prominent in my face. So I guess they figure in my work, in the close ups, at least.

Q: When you first walked on that set, could you have imagined that you'd end up with such a central, pivotal part in all of this?

A: Oh, gosh. No. And I'm glad I had no idea at the time or I would've been so nervous I might have made a mess of things. As it was, it was going to be a guest spot, three episodes or so. And I thought, 'Well, I'll go. And I'll do it. And I'll hurry back home. And that will be that.' So I didn't have to get too worked up about it. So it was nice the way it came upon me gradually.

Q: Lost is a little bit like a scary movie — part of you wants to know what's going to happen and part of you doesn't want to know.

A: Exactly. And I think the part of you that wants to say, 'Don't tell,' should prevail because the landscape of our show is a certain set of mysteries. And if you explode those mysteries, then the show becomes unhinged. It doesn't have a place to live anymore.

Q: If I don't watch every single time, I get confused. Do you ever get confused?

A: I watch every time and I get confused. I work on the show and I'm confused. In a way, we have to allow that to happen, give ourselves over to the confusion and keep watching. Maybe things will get clearer.

Q: Do you get stopped when you're in public?

A: Sure, I get stopped everywhere.

Q: What do they say to you? Are little kids scared to come up to you?

A: Well, sometimes they are. Mostly I think people are just sort of delighted to see me. I think my character seems more fictional or unreal to people than some other characters. I think they don't expect to ever actually run into the person that is Ben. So I think people are surprised or taken back a bit, as if he's not supposed to exist outside the TV show.
